Brief
Mechanical Design Engineer needed for a well-known Facilities Management organisation based in either London or Manchester who are looking to employ an experienced and well-rounded Mechanical Design Engineer that takes pride in their work.
The successful candidate would contributes to the design and delivery of low-carbon mechanical systems across a range of retrofit and energy efficiency projects. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, the role includes developing HVAC, heat pump, and BMS designs; supporting project documentation; and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
This role offers the opportunity to build technical expertise, develop project delivery skills, and actively support the UK's decarbonisation and net-zero goals through innovative engineering solutions.

What the role entails:
Some of the main duties of the Mechanical Design Engineer will include:
Mechanical Design & Engineering
Assist with mechanical system designs across all RIBA Stages.
Design and integrate low-carbon energy solutions, including heat pumps, district heating, HVAC, and energy-efficient BMS.
Support energy modelling and system performance simulations using IES, Energy Pro, and other tools.
Ensure compliance with relevant standards (CIBSE, PAS 2035, MCS, UK Building Regs) and guidelines.
Support coordination of BIM and CAD-based design processes.
Design Documentation & Coordination
Assist in preparing technical reports, drawings, specifications, and schedules.
Coordinate with energy, electrical, and project delivery teams to ensure holistic system design.
Participate in design team meetings, capturing key actions and learning opportunities.
Project & Technical Support
Support and assist with risk reviews, design updates, and supplier engagement.
Provide technical input during procurement and early-stage contractor liaison.
Support internal teams with planning and funding application inputs.
Assist in identifying design risks and contribute to risk mitigation strategies and update the design risk registers.
Retrofit Strategy
Support internal teams and external clients in decarbonisation projects such as ReFit, PSDS, Warmer Homes, GHNF, and HNES.
Support the development of decarbonisation project planning for public and private sector clients, including local authorities, social housing associations, healthcare, and commercial organisations.
Conduct technical feasibility assessments for low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps, district energy systems, HVAC, BMS, and solar PV, ensuring their viability and suitability.
Support the retrofit design process, ensuring mechanical interventions align with decarbonisation goals and funding criteria.
What experience you need to be the successful Mechanical Design Engineer:
Experience:
3 to 6 years' experience in mechanical building services design.
Exposure to retrofit, decarbonisation, or low-carbon projects preferred.
Experience with energy analysis and mechanical calculations.
Previous participation in multidisciplinary project teams.
Qualifications:
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (BEng or equivalent).
Actively working towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with CIBSE or IMechE.
Willingness to pursue Retrofit Designer Certification (support provided).
