Controls Engineer

£50,000 - £52,000 per annum | Days Only | 37.5 hour week, with an early finish on Fridays.
Our client, An established manufacturing business is looking to appoint a Controls Engineer to support and develop its production machinery and control systems on site. This is a hands-on engineering role with real influence on plant performance, uptime and future projects.
The role
As Controls Engineer, you will be the site expert for PLCs, camera systems and associated control equipment, providing technical support, troubleshooting and continuous improvement across the plant. You will work closely with the Maintenance team and machinery OEMs to maximise equipment availability and reliability.
Key responsibilities:
* Provide technical support and fault-finding on PLCs, inverters, camera systems and MES for production equipment.
* Develop, maintain and optimise control system implementations, including operation and maintenance procedures.
* Modify PLC programs to improve machine performance and resolve malfunctions, ensuring safe changes and robust backups.
* Ensure accurate software backups are maintained and up to date for all PLC programs on site.
* Support the Maintenance team on breakdowns, helping to minimise downtime and maximise machine availability.
* Liaise with machinery manufacturers and group engineering teams on improvements, MES integration and new projects.
* Work with Engineering Stores to address obsolescence issues and maintain appropriate spares stock levels.
* Create work instructions and train Maintenance staff in basic PLC and camera system fault finding.
About you
You will be a pragmatic, shop-floor-focused engineer with strong PLC and automation skills, who enjoys solving problems and improving equipment performance. You will be comfortable working cross-functionally and communicating clearly with maintenance, production and external suppliers.
Essential skills and experience:
* Strong PLC knowledge and hands-on fault-finding/programming experience.
* Ability to write PLC programs and provide software support for control systems.
* Knowledge of data capture systems and MES, with good general IT skills and some network understanding.
* Proven fault-finding and problem-solving skills on automated production equipment.
* Experience within a manufacturing or industrial maintenance environment, with an understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice.
* Any exposure to ABB robots and RAPID programming would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Qualifications
* HNC/ HND/ NVQ Level 3 in Electrical or Mechanical Maintenance or above in a relevant discipline, with studies in PLC programming.
