Job Purpose

To be able to work within a small team operating cnc machinery including 3 axis CNC Milling, high speed spindle polishers, single point diamond turning machines and twin lap polishing machines to manufacture a wide range of precision optics.

Most of your duties will be completed working from your own initiative whilst also adhering to standard operating procedures and work instruction documents.

You will work such hours as requested by your team leader or manager to complete your tasks and support the business in the attainment of specific objectives and goals. This includes working shift patterns.

You will be involved in continuous process improvements participating as a team member or under the direct instruction from you team leader or manager.

You should be able to consistently demonstrate high levels of efficiency and quality in your output whilst ensuring scrap and rework is kept to a minimum.

Key Responsibilities

Communication

· Continually give your team leader or manager feedback on your progress, concerns, and suggestions.

· Provide accurate manufacturing completion dates to your team leader or manager to allow a smooth flow of product through the department.

· Communicate with internal customers and provide prompt feedback.

Quality

* Be competent to use in-process inspection equipment within the department and be able to interpret information to make changes to the process where necessary.

* Be able to consistently achieve low levels of scrap and rework.

* Have a good understanding for the relevant standard quality specifications.

* Examine all work prior to passing onto the next stage and be sure that it meets all requirements.

* Show good levels of craftsmanship and quality in the products that you produce.

Productivity

* Be able to consistently work towards, and improve, standard manufacturing times.

* Be able to manufacture high specification optics utilising your knowledge in fabrication processes.

Improvement initiatives

· You must show a common-sense approach coupled with the ability to suggest solutions and rectify potential problems.

· Be able to identify processing defects and understand the possible causes suggesting and making changes to the process to avoid their re-occurrence.

· Be able to suggest and implement ways in which to improve the manufacturing process.

Training

· You should be able to support other employees where necessary as requested by your team leader or manager.

General

· Adhere to Health & Safety requirements.

· Be able to maintain route cards and the relevant paperwork systems.

· Have a good understanding of technical drawings.

· Continually look for ways in which to reduce the usage of resources and keep waste to a minimum.

· Maintain a tidy work area and work within the guidelines laid down by the Health and Safety Executive and ensure that high levels of housekeeping are maintained, at all times.

Key relationships

· You are to work closely with the department passing on the necessary skills and providing assistance.

· You will have close contact with your Manager expressing any concerns or fears you may have.

· Work with the other employees within your department, showing respect and consideration.

Physical Demands

Fabrication optical technicians have a responsibility to assist in the general running of the area; this will involve physical activities such as transporting optics to various departments within the fabrication area. Frequent lifting of weights in excess of 5kgs may be required.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to carry out each duty satisfactorily. Reasonable adjustments may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Pay: £28,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
