Job Purpose

To carry out bricklaying and roofing works to corporate buildings, houses, flats and maisonettes owned or managed by the Council.

Designation of Post and Position within Departmental Structure

Reports to Trade Supervisor/ Contract Manager

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Carry out bricklaying, roofing and associated repairs works in a safe and effective manner using schedule of rates and working to the Council's Pay and Productivity scheme. Including but not limited to, Tiling, slate roofing, sheet roofing felt and single ply membranes, flashings and soakers, guttering, brick and blockwork, above and below ground, single and cavity skin, drainage repairs and clearance, paths slabs screeds and paving, excavating and clearance of debris, demolition and temporary support.
Carry out major refurbishment works either on planned programmes or one-off small jobs using schedule of rates and working to the Council's Pay and Productivity scheme.
To assess the materials needed and either obtain from the main stores or obtain official orders for purchase direct from appropriate supplier, making sure that receipts, goods received notes and other paperwork is obtained and passed to your supervisor daily.
Seek approval, prior to commencement of work, if the repairs needed exceed the work specified on the order.
The majority of work will be undertaken in occupied property so, care must be exercised at all times to avoid damage to occupants' property. All tenants and other customers to be treated with courtesy and respect at all times.
Site to be properly tidied up on completion of work or at end of shift with all waste materials removed from site and disposed of according to instructions.
All service sheets, orders and time sheets are to be completed legibly and returned to the main office promptly following completion of work or as directed.
Carry out all work in accordance with current codes of safe working practice, current legislation and Health and Safety at Work Act including CDM regulations. Health and Safety responsibility at Level 1.
All trades persons working for Building Maintenance should be in Council uniform and ID cards are to be carried and shown at all times.
Mobile phones / devices should be charged up and switched on at all times and must be answered unless unsafe to do so in which case the caller should be phoned back as soon as it is safe to do so.

Improves quality of services to customer/client.
Achieve minute targets/ job counts set under the Pay and Productivity Scheme to ensure financial viability of section.
Identify any additional work that is required, were possible and relevant complete this or seek advice before leaving the property.
Manage workload, tools and materials so as to maximise quality and productivity.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Education/Training

City and Guilds or NVQ in bricklaying with demonstrable experience of a range of bricklaying and roofing skills including repairs and new build/replacement.
Knowledge of Building Trades/Construction.
Desirable but not essential - ability to lay Single Ply roofing membrane
Proven capability of multi skilling.
Desirable but not essential - ability to dress lead

Experience

Worked within the general building business with experience of refurbishment and repairs.
Used to working in areas on own as well as part of a team or in a pair.
Used to working in occupied properties
Used to working at height
Proven capability of multi skilling

Skills, Abilities & Competencies

Able to deal with tenants who can be demanding or abusive using tact and diplomacy.
Able to prioritise and organise work to meet deadlines.
Operate small plant and power tools.
Skilled bricklayer work
Skilled Pitched roofer
Skilled Flat roofer
Ability to multi skill - patch plaster or render, form basic shuttering for casting concrete, lay drainage both surface and foul, clean test and repair guttering and down pipes, erect tower scaffold and working platforms, lay paths, slabs, concrete, core drill holes.
Good communication skills and demonstrate able Customer care.
Proven ability to work as part of a team.
Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.

Specific Working Requirements

37-hour week.
Split shift 7am/7pm,
Availability for call out rota if required.
Hold a full current driving licence.
