Job Title: Lead Software Engineer
Location: HQ – Harrogate /Hybrid
Salary: Circa £80k
Reporting to: CPTO (Chief Product & Technology Officer
Employment Type: [Full-Time / Permanent

About the Role:

Our client is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join the growing team and take a pivotal role in the ongoing development of their platform. You will architect and build a scalable web application, collaborating closely with the CPTO and wider team to shape the technical direction and deliver high-impact solutions.

As Lead Engineer, you will take technical ownership of your work, influence architectural decisions, and help drive best practices across the engineering function.

Key Responsibilities:

* Design, build, and maintain scalable web applications using Ruby on Rails

* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and implement new features

* Own and optimise relational database structures (PostgreSQL)

* Troubleshoot, debug, and enhance application performance

* Work with customer success teams to resolve complex technical issues

* Contribute to a culture of testing and clean code through TDD and code reviews

Required Skills & Experience:

* 3+ years' commercial experience with Ruby on Rails

* Strong experience with PostgreSQL

* Solid understanding of API design and development

* Proficiency in front-end technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery

* Hands-on experience with RSpec and Capybara for test-driven development

* A proactive, problem-solving mindset and a collaborative working style

Desirable / Bonus Experience:

* Sidekiq, Heroku, Github workflows

* Familiarity with Hotwire / Turbo / Stimulus

* Experience mentoring or leading junior developers

* Exposure to scaling applications in production environments
