As a result of growing demands for our client’s range of products focusing on zero emissions and an increasing number of exciting development programmes working on diesel, electric and hybrid technology, they are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer. The Principal Electrical Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and technical oversight of electrical systems across locomotives and associated equipment. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role ensures that all electrical engineering work meets regulatory, safety, and quality standards while supporting both new build and aftermarket projects. The Principal Electrical Engineer provides technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the electrical engineering team and acts as a key technical advisor across projects.
Principal Electrical Engineer Role:
• Lead the design, development, and integration of electrical systems for locomotives and related equipment.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level electrical engineers.
• Review and approve electrical schematics, drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and internal quality requirements.
• Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems.
• Support troubleshooting, fault analysis, and resolution of complex electrical issues during manufacturing, commissioning, and service.
• Contribute to product improvement initiatives, innovation projects, and lifecycle management of electrical systems.
• Assist the Engineering Manager in resource planning, project scheduling, and technical risk management.
• Liaise with manufacturing, service, and project teams to provide technical expertise and support.
Principal Electrical Engineer Requirements:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechatronic, or Electronic Engineering.
• Minimum of 8 years’ experience in electrical engineering, ideally within locomotives, rail, or heavy industrial equipment.
• Proven expertise in the design, integration, and testing of complex electrical systems.
• Strong knowledge of control systems, propulsion, auxiliary systems, power distribution, and industry standards.
• Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring technical staff.
• Proficiency in electrical design software, simulation tools, and engineering documentation practices.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Strong ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic engineering environment.
