Service Care Solutions is currently recruiting an Assistant Solicitor to join the legal team supporting the Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a high-profile public inquiry within a collaborative and specialist legal environment. The successful candidate will form part of a close-knit inquiry legal team, working directly to support the Inquiry Chair, Solicitor, and Deputy Solicitors. The role will involve contributing to the final stages of the inquiry, including preparation for publication of the final report.
Contract Length: 6–12 months
Start Date: ASAP (notice periods considered / BPSS completed)
Location: Victoria Quay, Edinburgh
Salary: Negotiable (PC/Levy fee can be covered if applicable)
Pay: Weekly
Key Responsibilities
Analysis and review of large volumes of evidence
Providing legal advice and day-to-day support to the Chair and senior legal team
Liaising with solicitors for core participants
Supporting archiving of inquiry evidence, including Freedom of Information and Data Protection assessments
Assisting with closing submissions, warning letters, and publication of the inquiry reportEssential Skills and Experience
Experience working with high volumes of evidence and producing clear, detailed legal analysis
Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail
Flexible approach with willingness to support across all aspects of the inquiry
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Adobe, Excel, including spreadsheet and tracker managementDesirable Experience
Previous public inquiry experience
Court experience
Experience dealing with data protection mattersRequirements
Scottish Practising Certificate (essential)Please note: Applications will not be considered from individuals who have previously worked for the Crown Office, PIRC, Police Scotland, or any of the inquiry’s Core Participant legal teams.
Attendance & Working Hours
Office-based at Victoria Quay, Edinburgh
Core hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00 (1-hour break)
Minimum office attendance: once per week (Tuesdays)
