My client is a Cambridge-based deep-tech engineering company developing high-performance MEMS technology. They are seeking an Experimental Physicist to take ownership of sensor characterisation and performance optimisation at device and system level.

This is a hands-on, physics-led role. The successful candidate will be responsible for understanding why the sensor behaves the way it does — and translating that understanding into measurable performance improvements.

The Role My client needs someone who can design structured experiments, extract meaningful data, and directly influence device design and calibration strategy.

You will:

Design and execute structured Design of Experiments (DOE) to characterise environmental sensitivities in MEMS gyroscopes.
Identify and quantify root causes of performance-limiting error sources, including:

Quadrature error
Frequency mismatch
Thermal drift
Bias instability and noise mechanisms
Build and validate physics-based analytical and FEA models to explain observed behaviour.
Work closely with MEMS design engineers to implement device-level and packaging-level improvements.
Support development of calibration and compensation algorithms (bias, scale factor, cross-axis sensitivity across temperature and vibration).
Contribute to reliability and qualification testing, feeding results directly back into design revisions.
Produce clear technical documentation and present findings internally. This role has genuine influence. The output of your work will directly shape device architecture and performance capability.

Candidate Profile My client is looking for:

BSc in Physics with 3+ years’ relevant industry experience, or a PhD in Physics or Engineering.
Strong understanding of sensor physics, particularly noise, stability, drift and environmental sensitivities.
Experience working with test electronics and automated data acquisition systems.
Strong data analysis skills in Python.
Ability to clearly communicate technical findings to both engineers and management.
Strong written technical reporting skills.Experience within inertial sensors, IMUs or precision MEMS devices would be highly relevant.

This is a deep-tech engineering environment with rapid iteration cycles. Test plans evolve as new architectures are developed. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a technically demanding, fast-moving setting.
