SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant – Full-Time | Birmingham
Location: Birmingham (specific school partnership)
Contract: Full-Time | Temporary | Ongoing
Start Date: January 2026 (or sooner)
Salary: Competitive, based on experience
APT Education is proud to be working in close partnership with a warm, inclusive primary school in Birmingham that places emotional wellbeing and pupil-centred support at the heart of everything they do. This school is seeking a dedicated SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant to join their team full-time from January 2026 or sooner, supporting pupils across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Set in a vibrant community, the school has a strong ethos of belonging, resilience, and respect. Staff work collaboratively to create a safe and nurturing environment where every child is seen, heard, and supported—especially those who face emotional and behavioural challenges.
? About the Role:
You’ll be working closely with a small group of pupils who require additional support to manage their emotions, build trust, and engage positively with learning. Many of these children have experienced trauma, have diagnosed conditions such as ADHD, Autism, or attachment difficulties, and may display challenging behaviour.
Your role will include:
* Providing consistent 1:1 and small group support focused on emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social development
* Supporting pupils through transitions, sensory needs, and moments of dysregulation using trauma-informed approaches
* Collaborating with class teachers, the SENCO, and external agencies to implement EHCPs and personalised support plans
* Using restorative practices and therapeutic strategies to build trust and promote resilience
* Creating a calm, structured, and emotionally safe space for pupils to thrive
✅ What We’re Looking For:
* Proven experience supporting children with SEMH needs and/or challenging behaviour in a school or care setting
* A calm, empathetic, and confident approach to de-escalation and emotional support
* Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, and behaviour strategies
* Excellent communication skills and a team-first mindset
* A valid Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
? Why This School?
* A nurturing, inclusive ethos where staff wellbeing is valued as highly as pupil wellbeing
* A leadership team that prioritises emotional literacy and whole-child development
* Regular CPD and training in SEMH, safeguarding, and therapeutic approaches
* A collaborative staff culture where your voice and expertise are respected
? Why APT Education?
* We’re a people-first agency specialising in primary education
* We work with schools that share our values of inclusion, compassion, and excellence
* You’ll receive ongoing support, training, and career development from our dedicated team
If you’re a passionate SEMH practitioner who believes in the power of relationships, consistency, and compassion, we’d love to hear from you
