A nationally recognised public organisation tasked with safeguarding England's historic environment is seeking a skilled Architect to join a specialist conservation team. This is an excellent opportunity for an Architect with strong technical and interpersonal skills to contribute to nationally important programmes that preserve and repurpose traditional buildings at risk.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract until March 2026, offering hybrid working from one of several regional offices including Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth, Cambridge or London.

The Architect's role

As an Architect working within the national Regions Group, you will play a vital part in delivering time-limited government grant programmes focused on the repair and reuse of heritage buildings. Acting as both technical advisor and conservation advocate, the Architect will engage with private owners, community groups, building trusts, and professional consultants to assess, guide, and support applications for heritage-led regeneration funding.

You will assess technical drawings and specifications, provide sustainability advice, evaluate community impact, and ensure that schemes are sufficiently developed to meet conservation and delivery goals. Working closely with regional offices, the Architect will support the coordination and monitoring of grant-aided projects across all stages-from application to post-grant review.

The role includes site inspections, often in challenging locations or conditions, and attendance at occasional evening or weekend community meetings.

The Architect

To be considered for the Architect role, you must be professionally qualified and currently registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB), with substantial experience in the repair and adaptation of traditional buildings and conservation-led design.

You should be confident in producing technical reports, liaising across professional teams, and applying national conservation standards. Strong working knowledge of sustainability in heritage design and the wider community impact of built environment regeneration will be essential, alongside excellent communication skills.
