Linux System Administrator** (Contract)
Duration: 12 Months (Possibility for extension)
Location: Camberley/Hybrid (3 days on site)
Rate: A highly competitive Umbrella Day Rate is available for suitable candidates
Role Overview
As a key member of our small, focused team, you will collaborate closely with High Touch Patching Teams across the globe to implement a seamless "follow the sun" model for patching support. Your primary responsibility will be to actively reduce server vulnerabilities within our support scope by executing and overseeing server patch management activities, including targeting, scheduling, installation, governance, and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Execute patch installations during specified maintenance windows using various mechanisms, including BladeLogic jobs and custom scripts, while performing manual updates for complex systems.
Conduct pre-checks to ensure successful patching events and post-checks to verify system stability and configuration consistency.
Maintain regular communication with application production support teams, platform engineering teams, and level 3 systems operations teams.
Troubleshoot and resolve patch and server failures, escalating issues as necessary. You will serve as a bridge, effectively communicating symptoms and troubleshooting efforts to global operations teams.
Develop and implement scripts within BladeLogic to automate operating system patching and updates across multiple systems.
Document and maintain operational procedures, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and adherence to established protocols.
Qualifications and Skills:
Extensive experience with Red Hat Linux (7.x, 8.x, 9.x) and OS Kernel.
Proven track record of operational execution within enterprise environments, particularly with 1,500+ servers.
Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose, research, and resolve platform-related issues.
Familiarity with x86 midrange IBM, HP, and Dell hardware troubleshooting.
Proficiency in scripting languages such as Ansible, Perl, Shell, and Python.
Experience with RHCS clustering solutions for Red Hat Linux and knowledge of GPFS clusters.
Familiarity with Mellanox and SolarFlare products and technology.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
Willingness to work weekends as required.
