Behaviour Support Assistant – Primary School (Preston) Contract: Full-time / Term-time
Location: Preston, Lancashire
Start Date: ASAP / January 2026 (flexible)

About the Role We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Behaviour Support Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Preston. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral leads, and SEND teams to support pupils who present with behavioural, social, and emotional needs.

You will play a key role in helping children regulate their emotions, access learning, and develop positive relationships. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a difference, has a nurturing approach, and thrives in a supportive school environment.

Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with behavioural or social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs

Implement behaviour management strategies aligned with school policies and EHCPs

Support pupils in class, during transitions, and in unstructured times such as break and lunch

Work collaboratively with class teachers, pastoral staff, and external agencies

Support de-escalation and conflict-resolution strategies using a calm and positive approach

Monitor pupil progress and maintain accurate behaviour logs and reports

Promote emotional resilience, positive communication, and self-regulation techniques

Build nurturing, respectful, and trusting relationships with pupils

Contribute to personalised learning plans and behaviour intervention programmes

Assist with safeguarding and uphold the school’s values and expectations

Person Specification Essential:

Experience supporting children with behavioural needs, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, or similar

Understanding of positive behaviour strategies and restorative approaches

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively in challenging situations

A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach

A commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing

Desirable:

Experience within a primary school setting

Team Teach / MAPA / PBM or similar de-escalation training

Knowledge of SEND frameworks and EHCPs

Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
