Job Description

Join our team to play a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and compliance of mission-critical software systems used in advanced underwater defence technologies. As part of the software assurance function, you’ll work closely with engineering teams to make sure software development follows rigorous standards and best practices — helping to guarantee that every line of code meets the highest levels of quality, safety, and security.

Location: Manchester
On-site: Monday – Thursday
Seniority: Mid-level (4+ years’ experience)
Clearance: SC clearable (no caveats)

Key Responsibilities

Ensure that software development activities conform to industry and internal quality standards.
Support the implementation of software assurance frameworks across multiple project phases.
Conduct reviews, audits, and verification to confirm compliance with defined processes and best practices.
Collaborate with engineering teams to identify, record, and resolve process non-conformances or risks.
Manage assurance documentation, including reports, assessments, and test evidence.
Provide guidance to developers and test teams on process improvements, configuration management, and tool usage (e.g. Jira).
Contribute to ongoing improvement of software assurance methods and QA culture across projects.

Qualifications

Required Skills

Solid understanding of Software Configuration Management (SCM) and version control best practices.
Experience using Jira for change, task, and issue management.
Strong knowledge of software testing principles, particularly unit testing and code verification.
Familiarity with software development processes, life cycles, and documentation standards.
Excellent communication and team collaboration skills to interface with multi-disciplinary teams.
Demonstrated leadership capability in coordinating software assurance or QA activities.
Experience with project reporting, metrics tracking, and quality status reviews.Soft Skills & Collaboration

Strong sense of ownership and attention to detail in process compliance.
Excellent communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Team-oriented mindset with the ability to mentor and support others.
Organised and proactive, with a positive approach to challenges.Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
OR a relevant technical military background with equivalent hands-on engineering experience.Desirable Skills

Knowledge of Defence software and quality processes.
Familiarity with software QA frameworks and assurance documentation practices.
Strong attitude and behaviours aligned with safety-critical and defence engineering environments.Security Clearance Requirement

UKSV (United Kingdom Security Vetting) clearance is required for this role, with Security Check (SC) as the minimum standard, either already held or with a willingness to undergo the process.
Some roles/projects may require Developed Vetting (DV) clearance; while not mandatory, a willingness to obtain DV clearance would be beneficial.
As part of the onboarding process, candidates will be asked to complete a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS); details of the evidence required to apply may be found on the government website
