Position: Process Chemist

Hours: 36.25 hours per week, full-time, permanent position Location: West Bromwich
Role: Our client requires a Process Chemist. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated Process Chemist who will join a Technical and Innovation team. This role would suit a recent graduate or early-career professional who is looking to gain hands-on experience in chemical manufacturing and process development. Reporting to the Technical and Innovation Manager, you will work closely with colleagues across departments including Production, Engineering, Quality, and R&D, to support the optimisation of existing processes and assist in the introduction of new products.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Assisting in identifying and evaluating opportunities for process improvement in collaboration with the Production department.
* Participating in Process Improvement Groups and supporting the use of the Britest Toolkit to guide decision-making.
* Conducting laboratory-based experiments to support proposed process changes.
* Providing support during the implementation of process changes, ensuring they are executed safely and effectively.
* Helping to analyse production data and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
* Contributing to troubleshooting production issues such as process deviations or yield losses, under supervision.
* Supporting the scale-up of new products from laboratory or pilot plant to full-scale production.
* Maintaining accurate records and documentation for process changes and control procedures.
* Promoting safe working practices and maintaining good housekeeping standards in the workplace.
* Receiving training and development opportunities, including potential involvement in process safety assessments and customer communication as your experience grows.
Candidate Requirements:
* A degree (BSc or equivalent) in Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
* A strong interest in chemical manufacturing and process development.
* Good understanding of fundamental chemical principles and reaction mechanisms.
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and an understanding of chemical drawing software.
* Willingness to learn and develop within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
* Ability to work on a COMAH site and pass an enhanced DBS check.
Desired:
* Master’s degree (MSc, MChem) in a relevant discipline.
* Industrial placement or internship experience in a manufacturing or lab environment.
* Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or BRITEST.
* Basic understanding of process safety, regulatory compliance (REACH, COSHH), or analytical techniques.
* Awareness of control systems or data analysis tools.
* Interest in working towards professional accreditation (e.g., Chartered Chemist status)
