Earth Observation Engineer
A great opportunity for a remote sensing or earth observation professional, with knowledge of satellite Earth observation (EO) data systems and processing, to join our UK team.
The Earth Observation Engineer will contribute to operational and science-based services and system developments for national, and international, based EO programmes.
Responsibilities/ Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to;
* Support services to ESA related to data Quality Control (QC) included within the EarthCARE Mission of the EarthCARE Data Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC)
* Interact with expert customers on mission data issues
* Support the DISC QC Coordinator in planning and prioritisation of all activities relating to EarthCARE QC
* Back-up support to Junior EO Engineer to perform routine quality control checks of data products and produce quality reports
* Identify and investigate quality issues and anomalies
* Research and respond to technical user queries
* Maintain QC tools and scripts used locally
* Use programming to automate/ enhance routine procedures
* Prepare posters, publications and presentations at meetings/ conferences
* Contribute to technical proposal authoring to win new work
* Carry out occasional travel to conferences/ customer sites
Qualifications/Experience
* University degree/MSc (or equivalent) in Geography, Physics, Remote Sensing or a related discipline.
* Experience/Understanding, in either an industrial or academic setting;
* Supporting operational processing systems for EO data (e.g. level ‘1’ to level ‘2’ and ‘level 3’ processing)
* Working with Passive Microwave, Optical, SAR or Altimetric earth observation data
* Using and adapting tools and scripts for remote sensing data manipulation
Essential Skills
* Interest in working to support an operational ESA mission
* Some experience in Earth Observation and data processing levels
* Some team management experience
* Experience in a customer facing role
* Ability to plan and prioritise activities
* Some proficiency with Linux operating systems and Python
* Proficiency in writing technical documents
* Good organisational and communication skills
* Attention to detail
Desirable Skills
* Some knowledge or understanding of EarthCARE
* Understanding of instrument calibration principles (e.g. geometric, radiometric, spectral, etc)
