Families First is Trafford’s frontline children’s service — you’ll be at the point where the right decision, at the right time, changes the whole direction for a family. You’ll work across duty and assessment, and then continue supporting families through the Child in Need process, with a clear aim to keep caseloads manageable (target around 20 children).
About the role
This is a permanent Social Worker position within Families First, covering assessment and duty activity and ongoing work with families under Child in Need planning. The service is split across four locality teams (North, West, South, Central), giving you strong local partnership links and consistent multi-agency working.
Key responsibilities
Complete high-quality assessments and plan timely interventions to improve outcomes for children
Manage duty activity, respond to referrals, and make proportionate decisions around next steps
Undertake statutory visits and direct work with children and families to understand risk and need
Progress and review Child in Need plans, ensuring clear goals, timescales, and measurable impact
Work collaboratively with schools, health, police, early help and wider partners to coordinate support
Identify risk, escalate appropriately, and contribute to robust safety planning where concerns increase
Maintain accurate, defensible case records and clear chronology/analysis
Participate in locality-based working across Trafford’s North, West, South and Central areas

Requirements
Social Work England registration
Minimum 3 years’ post-qualifying experience
Confident across duty, assessment and Child in Need work
UK driving licence and able to drive for work purposes
Enhanced DBS (including Children’s Barred List) — processed as part of onboarding
Right to work in the UK (Trafford Council is not a licensed sponsor)
