The Technical Assurance, Modelling and Economics (TAME) team provides the evidence base for TfN’s long-term plans to connect the North’s towns and cities to create a more productive economic area. TAME is a team of analysts, data scientists and transport modellers who develop innovative data analytics and modelling tools and apply them in programmes and business cases to show how transport could enable this economic transformation.

The TAME team works closely with strategy and programme teams to analyse and appraise the proposed interventions in our future investment portfolio. This includes developing and applying pan-Northern data, modelling and appraisal practices to help understand the needs of the economy and transport system, and develop robust evidence.

TAME’s work is focused on TfN’s Analytical Framework, a suite of software tools that provides a consistent approach to data, modelling and appraisal across travel modes and regions of the North. Development and application of these tools requires a range of analytical techniques, including: acquiring and storing spatially enabled data; undertaking advanced statistical analysis; developing strategic modelling tools; carrying out economic appraisal of different transport options and providing objective, compelling recommendations to policy makers.

Role overview:
We are looking to appoint an Analyst to further strengthen our transport modelling and analysis team within TAME, establishing ourselves as a centre of excellence for those disciplines across The North and an innovator in the industry.

The Analyst will provide key input into the technical delivery of a broad range of analytical activities across the TAME portfolio, focussing on transport modelling, but also including economic appraisal, python programming and general transport analytics, working with colleagues and meeting customers’ needs and expectations across TfN, our local and national partners.

The Analyst will develop and operate transport models in several software packages to provide strategic analysis of road and rail interventions, selecting relevant information and applying specialist techniques in the development of business cases, transport strategies and policies or technical designs.

At our Analyst level working in the TAME team you will be required to provide data, analytics and assurance services, as set out within your role profile below, to support the delivery of the Governments Integrated Rail Plan in accordance with TfN’s Grant Funding Agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT).

What we are looking for:
We are seeking candidates who:
•    Are passionate about the role of transport in the North to support local and regional aims
•    Have experience in developing effective working relationships with project teams and clients
•    Have excellent communication and writing skills
•    Have a high level of numeracy with strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking
•    Experience in analysing, modelling and assessing future transport demands and networks with an emphasis on rail, highway and demand modelling
•    Knowledge of appropriate transport planning guidance and best practice
•    Have experience of transport modelling, preferably including rail, using one or more of SATURN, CUBE or VISUM
•    Have qualifications in an appropriate field such as transport planning, engineering, mathematics, computer science, economics, geography or similar

About You:
As an Analyst you will work in TfN’s TAME team to provide the responsibilities set out in the role profile, including to provide transport-related evidence for the North as per TfN’s Business Plan activities and on delivery of technical elements of the Governments Integrated Rail Plan.

You will be expected to take responsibility of managing the development of small areas of TAME’s Analytical Framework and prepare robust evidence for use by internal or external stakeholders.

The work is collaborative and requirements guided with time for training and development and provides an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing and vibrant team, driving the use of innovative techniques to solve real world problems.

Candidates must possess a highly numerate degree or possess substantial equivalent experience.

Closing Date: 12pm, 24th May 2024

Provisional Interview Date: 10th June 2024

In return, as well as a competitive salary, our other benefits are:

• Access to the local government pension scheme
• Access to various salary sacrifice benefits, including Travel Pass purchase scheme.
• Access to TfN’s Flexi-Time Scheme, allowing accrual of up to 18 additional days leave per year
