Job Title: Quality Assistant Manager
Location: HMP Sudbury
Salary: £35,000+ (DOE)
Contract: Permanent
Prison-based role requiring full site presence and face-to-face learner engagement.
Role Overview:
We are recruiting an experienced Quality Assistant Manager (Prison Education) to lead quality performance and drive improvements across all subject areas, including Functional Skills. This role champions excellence in teaching, learning, assessment, and behaviour management strategies within a custodial setting. You will also line manage Neurodiversity and Reading Specialists and promote corporate values and compliance throughout the department.
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Leadership & Assurance
* Drive the Quality Cycle across the department as the lead quality manager.
* Plan and lead annual lesson observation cycles, blended learning reviews, deep dives, and learning walks.
* Produce reports and action plans following observations and ensure effective feedback to staff.
* Undertake quality assurance on teaching, neurodiversity, and reading processes.
* Monitor and coordinate IQA/EQA schedules and carry out IQA duties where required.
Staff Development & Support
* Coach and support teachers to improve teaching practice and achieve action plans.
* Coordinate and deliver CPD based on trends from observations and reviews.
* Induct new teaching staff and provide mentoring support.
* Share best practice and cascade CPD from bi-monthly quality meetings.
Neurodiversity & Inclusion Management
* Line manage Neurodiversity/Reading Specialists and Inclusion Support Coordinators.
* Ensure screening, support plans, and interventions for Tier 3 learners are completed and reviewed monthly.
* Oversee reading interventions using resources such as That Reading Thing.
Operational Responsibilities
* Maintain and update the quality toolkit monthly and report centrally.
* Ensure learner engagement strategies are implemented and monitored.
* Provide teaching cover when necessary.
* Promote inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunities across all learning activities.
Essential Criteria:
* Degree or equivalent qualification.
* Teaching qualification (QTLS as appropriate) and/or Assessor/Verifier Award.
* Minimum Level 3 in English or Maths.
* Evidence of Grade 1 Lesson Observation within the last year.
* Experience coaching teachers to improve teaching practice.
* Knowledge of current initiatives in Functional Skills education.
* Strong leadership, influencing, and communication skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Desirable Criteria:
* Experience in custodial or community education settings.
* Track record of managing quality improvement and raising standards.
* Experience preparing for and supporting Ofsted inspections.
* Experience in neurodiversity and reading specialist work.
* Ability to travel across regions to share best practice
