The RNLI makes the news every day – thanks to over 300 volunteer Lifeboat Press Officers. This role will support those volunteers in this promotional work, training them in everything, from news release writing and basic video editing to using social media and briefing spokespeople.

But it’s not just our volunteers who need professional media training. Our senior leaders across the organisation, from the Chief Executive to regional operations staff, need to know how to handle interviews confidently. You’ll help prepare them to give their best in front of journalists and supporters – representing the RNLI and its lifesavers to the best of their abilities.

You’ll be responsible for assessing training needs across your patch, organising workshops, and delivering training to individuals and groups with a wide variety of experience.

You’ll have a good practical knowledge of PR or journalism and be passionate about teaching others. Previous experience training others is essential.

You’ll join a team of committed PR professionals, including 3 other Media Trainers who promote the reputation of the RNLI and work closely with them to make sure volunteers across the region continue to publicise the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

This role requires a lot of travelling, so be prepared to travel regularly with nights spent away from home. You will cover lifeboat stations and lifeguard beaches from Shetland to the Scottish Borders. The Regional Base is in Perth, and you will be required to travel throughout the area. The role may also require more extensive travel elsewhere within the RNLI and regular travel to the RNLI’s Support Centre in Poole. Flexibility over working patterns is essential - our volunteers are generally available after normal working hours and, on occasion, only at weekends.

This post requires a valid driving licence.

Safeguarding

The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect. We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment and have a zero-tolerance approach. The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting; International, International Child Protection Certificate process).

Diversity at the RNLI

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save Every One
