About the Role

As an SEMH TA, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health challenges. Working closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams, you will help create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment. Your role will involve both academic and emotional support, helping students to build confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward learning.

About the School:

The school encompasses two sites in Dorchester with one common shared purpose: to provide the very best in education and support for all children who (for a variety of reasons) find themselves outside of mainstream school education. The school is an alternative provision that uses vocational and extracurricular methods to enable the students to gain functional and life skills. With a primary and secondary division, the school is inclusive of all ages and abilities and strives to give its pupils the best possible opportunities for post 16 life.

Responsibilities of SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA)

Support Teachers: Assist in planning and delivering tailored learning activities that meet the emotional and educational needs of each student.
One-on-One and Group Support: Provide targeted interventions to help students manage their emotions, develop coping strategies, and improve their academic engagement.
Promote Positive Behaviour: Encourage and model positive behaviour, helping students to build healthy relationships and self-regulation skills.
Create a Safe Environment: Foster a calm and structured classroom atmosphere where students feel secure and understood.
Monitor Progress: Keep detailed records of student progress and behaviour, and contribute to regular reviews and planning meetings.
Collaborate with Professionals: Work alongside therapists, counsellors, and external agencies to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
Requirements of SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA)

Previous experience supporting students with SEMH needs is essential.
A calm, empathetic, and resilient approach to working with young people.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
A genuine passion for making a difference in the lives of vulnerable students.
Relevant qualifications or training in SEMH or related fields are desirable.
