We Build Recruitment are looking to hire a Document Controller on behalf of our client, a Manchester based main contractor delivering a wide range of construction projects with values ranging from £10,000 to £10 million. Their work spans multiple sectors and requires robust, well-managed document control to support safe, compliant, and efficient project delivery.
Role Summary
The Document Controller is responsible for the effective management, control, and distribution of project documentation across all stages of construction projects. Working closely with project managers, site teams, consultants, and clients, the role ensures that accurate, up-to-date information is available to the right people at the right time.
This role is critical to maintaining compliance, supporting quality assurance, and enabling smooth communication between all stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Document Control & Management
* Set up, manage, and maintain document control systems for multiple projects simultaneously
* Receive, log, distribute, and archive project documentation including drawings, specifications, schedules, reports, and correspondence
* Ensure all documents are correctly named, numbered, version-controlled, and stored in line with company and project procedures
* Maintain accurate document registers and trackers
Drawing & Information Control
* Manage the issue and receipt of drawings and technical information from consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers
* Ensure only current, approved documents are issued for construction
* Track revisions and superseded documents, ensuring obsolete information is clearly marked and removed from circulation
Project & Site Support
* Support project managers and site teams with timely access to documentation
* Assist with document-related queries from internal and external stakeholders
* Coordinate document flows between office-based and site-based teams
Compliance & Quality
* Ensure document control processes align with company QA systems, ISO standards (where applicable), and project-specific requirements
* Support audits by providing accurate and well-organised documentation
* Assist with the compilation of handover documentation, O&M manuals, and project close-out files
Communication & Coordination
* Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers regarding document submissions and information exchange
* Monitor deadlines for document submissions and follow up where required
Skills & Experience
Essential
* Previous experience in a Document Controller or similar administrative role within the construction industry
* Strong understanding of construction documentation, drawings, and project workflows
* Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail
* Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
* Experience using electronic document management systems (EDMS)
* Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Desirable
* Familiarity with common construction platforms (e.g. Viewpoint, Aconex, Asite, Procore, or similar)
* Knowledge of QA systems and ISO standards
* Experience supporting projects across a range of values and complexities
