The post holder will be a technologically focused mariner embedded in the Navigation Team to act as the team’s focal point for knowledge and liaison on matters relating to current and emerging technologies. Working with the Nautical Policy Manager to assist and deputise when necessary in the Navigation Team’s responsibilities, including policy development, advice, and operational oversight of SOLAS Chapter V, COLREGs, and navigational safety within UK waters.

Top Responsibilities

* Act as the Navigation Team’s specialist on emerging and future maritime technologies, supporting the MCA’s vision for Maritime 2050 and beyond.

* Provide expert operational advice to guide the safe implementation and regulation of new navigation systems and MASS.

* Review safety cases, exemptions, and technical submissions relating to navigation technology and vessel operations.

* Collaborate with Maritime Future Technologies and Ships Standards to shape navigation policy and regulatory development.

* Represent the MCA nationally and internationally on SOLAS V, COLREGs, and navigation safety matters.

* Support categorisation of waters, marine licensing, and wider Navigation Team projects through applied navigational expertise.

About you

You will need the following experience:

* Experience and understanding of the maritime industry from working on board vessels and an understanding of relevant concepts of Navigation.

* Relevant knowledge and experience of current maritime technology with an awareness of upcoming developments within the marine industry.

* A Valid Passport.

And Either:

* MCA recognised STCW II/1 Officer of the Watch Unlimited Certificate of Competency or above. and;

* Qualification at Level 6 or above of the England, Wales and Northern Ireland register of Regulated Qualifications (e.g Degree, degree apprentice) or recognized equivalent, preferably with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) element included in the syllabus.

Or:

* MCA recognised STCW II/2 Chief Officer or Masters Unlimited Certificate of Competency and;

* Qualification at Level 5 or above of the England, Wales and Northern Ireland register of Regulated Qualifications (e.g FdSc, DipHE, HND), or recognized equivalent, preferably with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) element included in the syllabus.
