David Brown Defence is seeking a skilled Mechanical Fitter to join our expert assembly team at our Huddersfield manufacturing site. In this hands-on role, you’ll be responsible for assembling large-scale marine gearboxes and associated equipment, with individual components reaching up to 26 feet and full builds extending to 85 feet in length.
This is a permanent, full-time position working 37 hours per week, with access to excellent benefits, structured shift patterns, and long-term development within a globally recognised engineering business.
Shift Patterns & Premiums
You’ll be assigned to one of the following shift patterns, based on business needs:
Double Day Shift (Monday to Friday): +18%
Continental Pattern (Days and Nights): +46.25%
Key Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Fitter, your core duties will include:
Assembling high-value marine gearboxes and ancillaries
Working from detailed technical and engineering drawings
Using precision measuring equipment including micrometres (internal and external)
Accurately recording build information including serial and cast numbers
Compiling shift handover notes and communicating progress effectively
Ensuring safe, organised working environments and strong housekeeping standards
Taking personal responsibility for health and safety, including reporting hazards and wearing PPE
Delivering consistently high-quality work under pressure
Supporting on-site gearbox installations and inspections when required
What We’re Looking For
Proven experience in mechanical fitting or assembly
Knowledge of rotating equipment, including assembly and test methods
Lifting and slinging load experience
Gantry crane and job crane operation
Background in heavy engineering or complex, high-value manufacturing environments
Strong attention to detail, quality, and safety
